Louise Beland B.Sc. (Honours) Osteopathy, PGCHE, FSCCO
I trained at The London Hospital, Whitechapel to be a Registered General Nurse between 1981 and 1984, and then worked as a Staff Nurse at The London during 1984. I then moved out of London and worked between 1984 -1994 in various retail and office-based companies, always in a support capacity.
Realising that I missed using my nursing knowledge, but wanting to expand my understanding of the physiology and function of the body, I undertook the 4-year full-time B.Sc. Honours in Osteopathy at The British School of Osteopathy, London, qualifying in 1998.
Alongside my clinical practice, between 1999-2009: I lectured at Oxford Brookes University on the B.Sc. Osteopathy programme and supervised in their Student Clinic; I wrote and Lectured in the modules on Anatomy and Embryology.
From 1999 to 2010, I undertook post graduate training in Cranial Osteopathy at The Sutherland Cranial College (now The Sutherland Cranial College of Osteopathy). I am a Fellow of the SCCO.
Through attendance at many post graduate courses for my Continual Professional Development, I have enhanced my working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, techniques and pathological conditions.
I am a Registered Osteopath (No 3341) working in South Oxfordshire.
Clinical osteopathic work
I have a broad knowledge of several working environments (e.g. office, shop, hospital, outdoors) which I have found invaluable for analysing what may have created an injury or be maintaining the condition; also very helpful for guiding people during their recovery. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life and from every age group; our babies through to our senior citizens.
I use a range of osteopathic manual techniques suitable for clients with acute pain to long term conditions; tailoring my treatments to each individual. This benefits my patients by having treatment sessions guided by their specific goals and preferences.
Since having my own two children, I have developed a special interest in treating mothers, babies and children. I have attended post graduate obstetric and paediatric courses and conferences over the years. However, much of the information and techniques for treating pregnant mothers and young children are equally applicable to everybody.
I have an interest in cancer care and use a range of gentle techniques to aid and support the body during cancer treatment and afterwards. There is ongoing scientific research that confirms that soft tissue massage can be very beneficial for people with cancer.
In November 2019 I attended a post-graduate course and now have a certificate in Oncology Massage.
In July 2021 I trained in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and am a Lymphoedema Training Academy (LTA) Certified Therapist in Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy. I am a member of MLD UK, an association membership organisation that exists to promote the development of MLD.
